The ascent was relentless. Loose scree shifted beneath my boots, forcing me to read the rock face for stable handholds. Midway up the talus slope, the trail vanished into a thicket of hemlock. Consulting my map, I calculated a quick bearing and pushed through the brush, discovering a narrow, unmarked fissure in the rock face. Inside the cool shadow of the crevice, the wind dropped to a whisper. Light filtered through the gap, illuminating ancient ripple marks etched into the stone—fossilized evidence of a prehistoric sea. Standing on the narrow ledge overlooking the vast expanse of the Driftless region, the rush of discovery washed over me.
